capillary in Physics
A very narrow tube in which a liquid rises or falls because of surface tension.
Water wets glass, so it climbs up a thin capillary; mercury does not wet glass, so it is pushed down. The narrower the capillary, the bigger the change in level.

L'eau mouille le verre, donc elle monte dans un tube capillaire fin ; le mercure ne mouille pas le verre, donc il descend. Plus le capillaire est étroit, plus la variation de niveau est grande.
